NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Head women’s basketball coach Greg Brown was invited to speak at Gary Blair’s Texas A&M Coaching Academy this past weekend. Over 200 high school, collegiate and AAU coaches from Florida to Washington state were in attendance to learn about the game of basketball.
Brown was the only non-Texas A&M presenter at the clinic. Bob Starkey, a former colleague from the University of Central Florida and current assistant at A&M, invited Brown to speak after an opening occurred.
“I was excited to step in when Coach Starkey called about the opportunity,” Brown said. “We were talking about topics and we came up with the best things I have seen in coaching, which is a play on the Coach Meyer Academy.”
In developing the points to talk about, Brown looked back on his unique experiences at previous stops from working with Don Meyer, Pat Summit (Tennessee) and Joi Williams (Central Florida). He divided the experiences into ten bullet points:
Breaking down even further, Brown discussed how he is taking the top thoughts and what fits best with his Lady Bisons and implementing it with them here.
“It was a great opportunity to go share Lipscomb’s message and vision,” Brown said. “Anytime you get your message out there to people to hear it gets people an opportunity to buy into your vision. It is an opportunity to enlarge your footprint.”
A unique aspect of speaking at another university, just not in front of Texas coaches but coaches from all over the country, was there seemed to be several connections with Lipscomb.
“We broke the coaches down into five rotations of 40 coaches each,” Brown said. There was not one group that did not have someone that had not been to camp or to Coach Meyer’s Academy or been to basketball camp either at Lipscomb or at Northern State.”
“That’s what ties me and Bob (Starkey) together, because of Coach Meyer. That is the neat thing about Lipscomb is how intertwined so many people are in such a unique way.”
