MACON, Ga. - Lipscomb's Dani Walker and Jacksonville's Joane Pierre split the Atlantic Sun Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week honor, announced Wednesday by the league office.
Walker is a junior from Wichita, Kan., majoring in kinesiology. She finished 10th in a field of 135 runners at the Crimson Classic, hosted by the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
Walker posted a 5-K time of 18:03.62 as the Lady Bisons finished in fourth place in the race behind Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi State.
“Dani rose up and had her best race of the year at Alabama, but our team did as well,” Lipscomb coach Bill Taylor said. “Dani was helped by having her teammates around her. They moved their way up and gave Dani encouragement and helped her to keep moving forward. She was able to finish very strong.”
This is Walker’s second career A-Sun Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week award.
Pierre, a senior at Jacksonville, won the UCF Attack Challenge 6-K in Orlando, crossing the finish line in a time of 21:25.60.
Other nominees were Kelly Perzanowski (Jr., FGCU), who placed 10th at UCF 6-K with a time of 22:28.95; Katie Hirko (Fr., ETSU), who earned her first career top-three finish at the Blue Ridge Open and Jasmine Polite (So., USC Upstate), who won the Upstate Invitational in a time of 19:06.25.
