JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Giving a 15-point head start to an opponent is tough to overcome. The Lipscomb women’s basketball team did just that on Saturday afternoon in an 86-64 loss to ETSU in Atlantic Sun Conference action in Johnson City.
The Lady Bucs jumped out to a 15-0 lead before the Lady Bisons got on the scoreboard on a jump shot from senior guard Hannah Phillips with 15:23 remaining in the first half.
“We can’t give up the open three’s on the ball reversal and the amount of rebounds we gave up,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said. “They were much more aggressive to the ball than we were and it showed.”
ETSU built a 25 point lead at 31-6 with 8:18 remaining before an 11-2 Purple and Gold run allowed the Lady Bisons to chip away at the deficit.
Freshman Alex Banks started the run with a layup and a pair of Phillips’ baskets, including a trey, squeezed around a Sasha Robinson jumper. Robinson then hit a high-percentage shot to pull within 16 at 33-17.
The margin would stay in that range until the intermission break as the Lady Bucs entered with a 17 point lead at 45-28.
Coming out of the break, ETSU again built a 25-point lead but this time, the Lady Bisons were able to chisel away at the lead and cut the deficit to 12 points.
With the score at 60-40, freshmen Presley Stastny and Kelli Smith hit back-to-back 3-point baskets to cut the deficit to 14 with 10:40 remaining.
Serena Clark scored on a layup to boost the ETSU lead back to 16 but four straight LU free throws cut the lead to 12 points at 62-50 with 9:03 remaining.
However, the Lady Bisons were unable to keep the momentum moving as ETSU hit the gas pedal again leading to the final score of 86-64.
“We settled down in the second half and I thought we were a possession away,” Brown said. “Anytime you can get into a single-digit deficit it gives you a chance.
“ETSU made plays when they had to and it shows in the final score.”
Phillips scored a game-high 18 points for the Lady Bisons, before fouling out in just 24 minutes of action. ETSU posted four in double-figures led by Destiny Mitchell with 16 points.
Lipscomb stays on the road traveling to USC Upstate for a 6 p.m. contest in Spartanburg, S.C. -on Monday. The Lady Bisons defeated the Spartans 57-56 in the first meeting of the year.
