NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Hannah Phillips needed nine points to become the fifth player in Lipscomb women’s basketball history to score 1,000 in her career. She did just that and more enroute to a team-high 22 points but the Lady Bisons fell 75-58 to Northern Kentucky on Saturday night in Allen Arena.
The newcomers to the Atlantic Sun Conference, Northern Kentucky, improved to 10-11 and 7-5 in league play while Lipscomb falls to 2-20 overall and 1-11 in A-Sun action.
The Lady Bisons held a 10-9 lead at the 16:23 mark scoring off a pair of baskets by Phillips and two Kelli Smith treys.
The Norse went on an 8-0 run to take the lead at 17-10 with 14:07 left in the first half. After a pair of free throws, NKU built an 11-point lead twice; with the second time coming off a Jaimie Hamlet layup to give Northern Kentucky the 26-15 lead with 7:52 remaining.
That lead began to shrink when Phillips hit a 3-point basket to score her 1,000th career point for the Purple and Gold with 5:58 remaining in the first stanza with the NKU lead at 30-24.
“I can’t say enough about Hannah for what she has gone through and her ability to focus,” Lipscomb head coach Greg Brown said. “It says a lot about her. We rely on her so much but it is a pleasure to coach her.”
Ellen Holton answered with a trey of her own to boost the Norse lead back to nine points but a LU run chipped away at the lead.
O’Neisha Smith hit a layup, Phillips hit a jump shot and a pair of free throws. Stasnty hit a free throw to for a 7-0 run and pulling within two points at 33-31 with 1:42 left in the half.
After Stastny made a steal from Rianna Gayheart, Phillips hit a wide open 3-point basket in the corner to give the Lady Bisons their first lead since the 16:23 mark.
However, that lead would not last long as Gayheart hit a fast break jump shot as time expired to give the Norse a 35-34 halftime lead.
Sasha Robinson tied the game at 39-39 with a layup, Kelli Smith hit her fourth 3-point basket of the game to give LU a 42-39 lead.
Again, NKU answered right back with a trey of their own as Kayla Thacker swished a long range basket to tie the game and start a 17-0 run to build a 61-44 lead with 8:46 remaining.
“For 25 minutes of the game we were in good shape,” Brown said. “The inability to sustain and make key plays at times cost us.
“I thought we did a better job, for the most part, with rebounding. Just too many turnovers and missed 2-foot shots that we need to stick in order to make plays. We need to be able to put a full game together, 25 of 40 minutes is not going to cut it.”
Northern Kentucky was led with a game-high 23 points from Thacker and 22 points from Holton, who also snagged a double-double with 11 rebounds.
After Phillips 22 points, Kelli Smith had 12 points for the Lady Bisons while Robinson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
The Lady Bisons take the short drive up the boulevard as they battle Belmont on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Curb Event Center.
