STARKVILLE, Miss. - Coach Kristin Ryman was hopeful of a renewed and aggressive spirit in her team.

Instead, the Lady Bisons opened a chilly Saturday with a 5-1 loss to Western Kentucky in the second day of the “Bulldog Battle” at Mississippi State.

The Lady Bisons lone run came in the first inning.  Brittany Elmore, who had reached base on a lead-off walk, scored from third on a fielding error.

Western Kentucky struck first with two runs in the first, one run in the third and two in the fifth.

Right-hander Tanner Sanders started for the Lady Bisons. She took the loss to even her record at 2-2. She pitched 4.1 innings and scattered six hits, allowed five runs (four earned), walked five and struck out seven.

Heather Parker, also a right-hander, relieved in the fifth and threw 2.2 innings. She did not allow a run the rest of the way. She gave up three hits, struck out one batter and hit one batter. She did not give up a walk.

Mallorie Sulaski went the distance for Western Kentucky. She gave up only two hits, singles by Elmore and Mickey Bell. She walked seven and struck out three.

Western Kentucky is 2-1 for the season.

The Lady Bisons, 3-4, will attempted to get back on the winning track later today when they play Murray State at 6.

The tournament ends Sunday with the Lady Bisons facing Mississippi State at 2.
