NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite a 10-hit afternoon, the Lipscomb baseball team was unable to overcome giving up a dozen hits to Atlantic Sun Conference foe North Florida in a 7-5 loss on Saturday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium in Nashville.
“We gave up five of the seven runs today with two outs,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “We’ve got to be able to close out innings better and not give them extra opportunities.
“We’ve also got to put it all together. It seems like we get one part going and the other breaks down. We’re a little bit snake bit but we’ve got to figure it out. “
Lipscomb (8-16, 0-2 A-Sun) opened the scoring in the contest with a two-run second inning as the Bisons took their first lead in the series. Sophomore first baseman Griffin Moore got things going with two outs by drawing his team-best 22nd walk of the season. Junior centerfielder Chad Shannon followed with a free pass of his own before junior right fielder Drew Adams ripped a double to the 375 foot sign in left center to give Lipscomb the 2-0 lead.
North Florida (18-7, 2-0 A-Sun) would answer right back in the top of the third to tie the game with a two-run frame before taking their first lead of the afternoon with a two-run fourth inning that ended the day for Lipscomb senior starter Davey Hackett.
Moore would cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the stanza as he blasted a Kyle Westwood offering into the lake in right field for his second home run of the season. UNF centerfielder Donnie Dewees would answer in the top of the fifth with a two-run blast off of the scoreboard to give the Ospreys a 6-3 advantage.
Adams would keep up his hot hitting in the bottom of the sixth with a double that landed just inside the first base line that raced into the left field corner and plated Shannon, who had reached on a one-out base hit to centerfield. Sophomore shortstop Joey Cecere followed with a two bagger of his own that scored Shannon and made it a 6-5 game.
That is as close as the Bisons would come however as the Ospreys added a run in the ninth for the 7-5 final to clinch the series.
Adams led Lipscomb offensively with a 2-for-3 afternoon at the dish with three RBIs and a run scored.
Corbin Olmstead picked up the win in relief for UNF after Kyle Westwood left after four innings due to injury. Olmstead tossed the final five innings allowing two earned runs and six hits to pick up his first win of the season.
Hackett took the loss for the Bisons allowing two earned runs, five hits and a pair of walks in four innings of work.
The series concludes on Sunday in a contest that has been moved up to a noon start due to weather concerns.
