TEMPE, Ariz. – The Lipscomb track and field teams kicked off their weekend in the sunshine of the Grand Canyon State competing in the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz. However, the results were less than desirable on Friday.
“Not a very good day for us,” Bill Taylor, director of cross country and track and field, said. “Fortunately I haven’t had to say that this season. It was true today though. We had three people compete and all three were significantly off their PR’s.”
The day started with sophomore April Terry in the hammer throw. She had a toss of 44.49 meters to finish 13th.
The evening session concluded with the men’s and women’s 5K runs. Junior Alex Newby timed in at 17:40.65 finishing in 10th place. She was just over a second behind ninth place but well off the pace of winner Natalie Becker from Kanas. Becker clocked in at 16:57.82.
Freshman Jared Wingerter clocked in at 15:02.48 to finish 14th in the men’s portion of the 5000-meter run. Adam Vess, who was running unattached, won the race in 14:33.82.
“April scratched twice, then got a mediocre final throw in the hammer this morning,” Taylor said. “Alex’s race wasn’t very fast and she was with the leaders for about half of it. The pace was very reasonable; I don’t know why she fell off so far. It happened in a lap and that was it.
“Likewise, Jared was running fine in the men’s race, then he just let the pack go and was gapped big in about 200 meters.”
With another day in Tempe, Taylor has his sights set on a new beginning Saturday.
“It was just one of those days as a coach where you scratch your head and plan for a better day tomorrow,” Taylor said.
Lipscomb returns to action Saturday continuing day two at the Sun Angel Classic along with the Margaret Simmons Invitational in Murray, Ky. The Sun Angel Classic begins at noon with field events and 4:15 p.m. for running events. The Margaret Simmons Invitational begins at 9 a.m. with field events and at 11 am. for running events.
