NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Fueled by a masterful first career start from freshman righthander Denton Norman, the Lipscomb baseball team claimed a 2-0 nonconference shutout over Western Kentucky on Tuesday night at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium in Nashville.
The Bisons (13-25) rookie went seven strong innings allowing five hits and four walks while fanning five Hilltoppers (20-17) to earn his first collegiate win.
“Everybody is really excited for Denton,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “He just took advantage of his opportunity. He gave us seven unbelievable innings for his first start. I’m so proud of him.”
The contest saw Norman get out of a pair of jams in the third and fourth innings before Lipscomb senior third baseman Gray Hutchinson launched a fifth-inning blast over the left field wall to put the Bisons out in front 1-0.
Lipscomb would then tack on the only other run of the contest in the sixth when junior right fielder Drew Adams tripled to lead off the frame and then came across the dish on a sacrifice fly to deep right field by sophomore first baseman Griffin Moore.
Those two tallies would be all the Bisons would need as Norman carried Lipscomb into the eighth and the bullpen trio of Blake Fonfara, Tyler Burstrom and Tyson Ashcraft would combine to allow one hit and one walk in the final two innings of work.
“Anytime you can combine for a shutout like that it’s a solid performance,” said Forehand. “Western Kentucky is a solid baseball team. For us to hold them down offensively is pretty good. We’ve got to keep this momentum going and carry it into this weekend and do some damage at Mercer.”
Ashcraft picked up his third save of the season by working the final 1.1 innings allowing one hit and striking out one Hilltopper.
The Bisons hit the road again this weekend for a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference set at No. 24 Mercer that gets underway on Friday night in the “Peach State”.
