NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Needing a win to control its own destiny, the Lipscomb women’s soccer team did not get the desired result in a 1-0 loss to ETSU Friday at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.

The Lady Bisons (5-7-5, 2-3-3 A-Sun) entered the match holding the sixth and final position in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings to qualify for the championship but fell into a tie for seventh place with North Florida.

With the victory, ETSU leap-frogged the Lady Bisons for sixth place in the standings and now control its own destiny with one game remaining in the season.

Overall, the game was very competitive. The Lady Bisons held possession but was unable to convert on either of their shots on goal.

“I thought we came out as sharp as we have all year,” Lipscomb head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “We are playing some of the best possession soccer and creating chances. Those chances we were scoring on earlier in the year and we are just not converting at the moment.

“We had a few really good looks but we just couldn’t capitalize.”

The lone goal in the game came in the 74th minute as Sarah Zadrazil connected on her eighth goal of the season and notched her 27th point of the year. She brought the ball down the right side of the field and struck her shot with a low line drive into the left corner.

“Part of our game plan was to keep their No. 27 (Zadrazil) off the score sheet,” O’Brien said. “I think she is the player of the year in the conference. Between goals and assists, she is just very talented.”

Both goalkeepers tallied two saves as Jasmine Elliott was credited with the shutout for the Buccaneers. Anna Buhigas’ two saves for the Lady Bisons continues to place her in the top two for saves this season in the A-Sun.

Despite falling in the match O’Brien was happy with the play from the Lady Bisons heading into the regular season finale and senior day on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against USC Upstate.

“I thought we defended well and played well but just got taken advantage of by a very talented player on a solo effort,” O’Brien said.

Lipscomb is still alive to clinch its first-ever berth in the A-Sun Championship. An ETSU loss to Northern Kentucky and a Lipscomb win over USC Upstate on Sunday would still qualify the Lady Bisons for tournament play.
