NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb Lady Bisons are back in the mix in Top 25 voting in one softball poll.
In the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 the Lady Bisons received two votes. Lipscomb softball coach Kristin Ryman is glad that her team is once again receiving some recognition by poll voters. However, at this stage of the season she is more concerned about where the Lady Bisons are located in the NCAA Division I RPI.
“Postseason tournament teams are not determined based on the top 25,” Ryman said. “We want to make sure we are keeping our RPI high.”
This week the Lady Bisons are 33rd in the RPI, up from 35th last week. They do not return to action until this weekend when Mercer, ranked No. 38 in the RPI visits Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium. A doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game will be played Sunday at 1.
“Obviously, the win (Wednesday night) against UAB helped us,” Ryman said of the doubleheader split. “UAB turned around and had a good weekend at Tulsa which is in top 20 right now. All of those wins help us.
“We want to make sure we are finding ways to beat top level teams. If we are beating good teams that helps us that much more.”
The Lady Bisons are 31-9, 11-6 in the Atlantic Sun standings. Mercer is 29-13, 11-4 in the conference and is scheduled to play a single game at Kennesaw State Wednesday.
Two other A-Sun teams are in the top 40 in the RPI this week. USC Upstate is 24th and Stetson is 39th.
The Lady Bisons visit Stetson April 18 and 19.
“This weekend and next weekend are going to be huge for us,” Ryman said. We still have one mid-week game coming up at Western Kentucky (April 23). All of those are going to help us if we beat those teams.”
Ryman thinks that in order to earn an at-large bid a mid-major team would need to be ranked 35th or higher.
“We are in a great spot right now in the RPI,” Ryman said. “We are right where we want to be with several high RPI teams left on our schedule.
“We have played well lately. We had a good weekend.”
With no midweek games on the schedule the Lady Bisons took Monday off after sweeping ETSU this past weekend. Tuesday was reserved for individual workouts.
“At this point in the season individual work is a little more of what we need,” Ryman said. “We might schedule a scrimmage for our pitchers to have some live innings during the week.
"We have a big weekend coming up. It should be exciting.”
