The Lipscomb Bisons completed their first series sweep of the year on Sunday, March 5. After taking both games from Florida A&M in Saturday's double-header, the Bisons broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth on Sunday to take the game 5-4.
Right hander Matt Schnelly got the start for the Bisons. In Schnelly's last start he pitched a three hit complete game shutout against Pittsburgh. The start was enough to make Schnelly Co-A-Sun Pitcher of the Week.
The Rattlers got on the board first in the bottom of the third, using three hits and two walks to plate three runs.
The Rattlers starter, Chad Smith held the Bisons scoreless until the top of the sixth. Zac Miller led off the inning with a walk. Two outs later, Miller advanced to third on an error by the Rattlers second basemen. Patrick O'Rourke followed with a double to center scoring Miller to bring the score to 3-1.
The Rattlers got the run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Peter Guastella.
However, the Bisons used a three run seventh to knot the game at four. Allen Bolden led off the inning with a double to center and advanced to third on a single by Tadd Brewer. Ryan Mitchell followed with a single, scoring Bolden. The next batter, Nathan Sensing singled to load the bases. Miller hit a sacrifice fly to score Brewer, and bring the score to 4-3. Caleb Joseph followed with a fielder's choice to tie the score at four.
For the second time this weekend, the Bisons used a ninth inning rally to earn the win. An RBI single by Miller in the ninth was all the Bisons needed to take the lead and the ball game.
Schnelly earned the win to bring his record to 2-0. In 8.2 innings, he allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks. He struck out 13.
Brandon McClurg recorded the final out to earn his first save.
The Bisons record now stands at 5-6 while the Rattler fall to 1-13.
Lipscomb returns to action on March 7, when the Bisons travel to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on Samford.
