Lipscomb University men's basketball player Shaun Durant has been invited to represent Great Britain in the World University Games.
Other players on the team include Rasheed Quadre (LaSalle); Torrez Johnson (Marshall); Mark Pratt (Towson); Nick George (Virginia Commonwealth) Olu Babalola (Clemson and Ian Hughes (Oregon).
"We are delighted to have Shaun on the team," said team manager Bob Chappell. "It is an opportunity of a lifetime for him. I would like to acknowledge the cooperation of Lipscomb University, and in particular Jay Walton, in ensuring that Shaun plays on the team. We are very excited about the whole experience."
The World University Games are scheduled for Aug. 10-22 in Izmir, Turkey. The team will leave for Turkey Aug. 7 for training and practice games against international competition.
The Great Britain team will play against Australia, Lithuania, and Lebanon in the pool games. Results against those teams will determine the opponents in the championship rounds. In the 2001 games, Great Britain finished in 12th, but in 1995 and 1997 they finished sixth.
"I think it's great that Shaun has this opportunity," said Lipscomb coach Scott Sanderson. "He's going to play against some high-level competition and get to see a part of the world that he's never seen. I know he is excited about the trip and he will do a great job representing his country."
Durant, a senior this season, played last season with the Bisons after transferring from Kaskaskia Community College. He averaged 7.6 points, third best for the Bisons, and 5.6 rebounds, second best on the team.
