Courtney Boynton scored 13 points and Penny Jones added 10, but Lipscomb's Lady Bisons could never take control of the game in a 66-51 loss Saturday night to Samford in Birmingham ,Ala., in the first round of the Sheraton Roundball Classic at Birmingham-Southern's Bill Battle Coliseum.
Samford was the early leader in the game, taking a 16-8 advantage at 11:33 of the first half. The Lady Bisons, sparked by four points from Julie Martin during the stretch, took over the lead at 20-18 with a little over eight minutes left.
Samford led 33-39 at intermission.
Samford took over in the second half opening up a 41-31 advantage in the first five minutes.
Jones barely missed a double-double, pulling down a game-high eight rebounds. The Lady Bisons held a 37-35 edge on the boards, the second game in a row where they have out-rebounded the opposition.
The Lady Bisons shot 45.8 percent from the field in the first half, but cooled off to 30 percent in the second half, 37 percent for the game.
Samford is 2-0. The Lady Bisons, 0-2, face Birmingham-Southern Sunday afternoon at 4.
