Friday, March 09, 2007Impressive pitching and a strong offensive attack resulted in a 13-2 win for the Bisons in their series opener against Alcorn State on Friday, March 9.
The Bisons continued their scoring in the third, using solo homeruns by Caleb Joseph and Wilkins to give them a 4-0 lead.
Alcorn State would get a run back in the bottom of the third to bring the score to 4-1.
However, the Bisons were just getting started. Andrew Nickerson recorded an RBI single in the fourth, before Joseph homered once again in the fifth to increase the Bisons lead to 6-1.
The Bisons had their biggest inning in the sixth. Joseph doubled his RBI total on the day, with a two run single. In all, four Bisons' runs crossed the plate.
In the eighth, Joseph recorded his third home run of the game, a three-run shot which gave the Bisons a 13-2 lead.
In the win, Joseph was 4-5 with seven RBIs. Wilkins and Bond also led the Bisons' offense, recording three hits each, with Wilkins also racking up three RBIs.
Bisons' starter, right-hander, Rob Smithson threw a complete game, giving up just two runs on three hits while striking out seven. He earned the win to improve his record to 3-0. In 30 innings, Smithson has given up just two earned runs on 16 hits. His ERA is an impressive .60 and opponents are batting just .148 against him. He is leading the team in strikeouts with 33.
