Dr. Steve Potts, outgoing Director of Athletics at Lipscomb University, doesn't like surprises, but this one left him speechless for more than a moment.
Friday night, near the end of the Lipscomb Board of Directors meeting in the south lobby of Allen Arena, board member Jim Allen and Lipscomb President Dr. L. Randolph Lowry, announced they had some presents for Potts. Dr. Potts and his family, wife, Jaimie and sons Tyler and Tanner, are returning to California and Pepperdine University. Dr. Potts will serve as Senior Associate Director of Athletics. He had left an administrative position at Pepperdine School of Law to accept the position at Lipscomb.
The big surprise was the induction of Dr. Potts into the Lipscomb Athletics Hall of Fame.
Among those attending were several Hall of Fame members, members of Dr. Potts family and several members of the athletics department staff.
Hilton Dean, Chairman of the Board for Lipscomb, made the official announcement of the induction of Dr. Potts. First, he introduced the Hall of Fame members who entered for the ceremony.
"I suspect you may have recognized a common denominator as the folks entered," Dean said to the crowd. "They are the backbone of Lipscomb's Athletic history _ members of the Lipscomb Athletics Hall of Fame.
"These every talented and generous individuals have taken their time to visit because of a special honor we are prepared to bestow. Steve Potts, please join me up here while I introduce another group of special guests _ members of your family. These are the folks you haven't seen much in the past 8 ½ years because of the long hours you have invested in building an NCAA Division I athletics program in which we can all take pride.
"We are firm believers in `giving people flowers while they're living,' and in recognition of the tremendous leadership he has provided to a very important part of this University, it's my honor to induct Dr. Steve Potts into the Lipscomb University Athletics Hall of Fame."
The plaque was presented by Dr.Carl McKelvey, a Lipscomb legend for his many years of service as a teacher and administrator. The text of the plaque reads as follows:
"Steve Potts served as Director of Athletics from January 2000 through May 2008. During his tenure Steve led Lipscomb University's transition from NAIA to NCAA Division I status. After guiding Lipscomb through four challenging years of NCAA Division I provisional membership, he oversaw the school's successful passage into active membership in September 2003.
"In October 2001, Steve orchestrated Lipscomb's acceptance as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference in which Lipscomb began competing as an official member in the fall of 2003. Steve was also responsible for effectively leading the institution through the 18-month NCAA athletic certification process that was completed in 2005.
"Under his leadership the Lipscomb athletics program quickly made an impact in the Atlantic Sun Conference, winning conference championships in women's basketball, men's basketball and women's volleyball. Under his direction, Lipscomb served as host school for the 2007 Atlantic Sun Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships and the 2008 Men's and Women's Basketball Championships.
"During his time at Lipscomb Steve was instrumental in the construction of Allen Arena, Lipscomb's 4,000 square foot athletic weight room, the Draper Diamond Softball complex, and the Lipscomb Tennis courts, along with major renovations to Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium and the Lipscomb Soccer complex.
"Steve Potts will always be remembered as a friend and builder of Lipscomb Athletics."
