Lipscomb opened the 2007 Cross Country season Friday night at the Belmont Opener.
The Bison men finished fourth out of 13 teams.
The men were led by a stellar effort from sophomore Ryan Chastain, who finished ninth overall with a time of 15:36 for the 5-K race. Also finishing in the Bison top five were Jordan Wilson (19th 15:51), David Wolfe (31st 16:13), Andrew Shankles (46th 16:38) and freshman Jeff Hoover (48th 16:43).
" Jordan ran after a week of rehab in the pool, so I am very pleased with his performance. David improved his time 22 seconds over last year. With the course running an average of eight seconds slower than last year, that is very nice improvement. Likewise, Andrew improved by 17 seconds over last year, and Jeff was a surprise in our top five. He has not been training at that level yet. This race shows us that he is a capable runner who will make a big impact on the program."
Other finishers for the men included Clint Carter (58th 16:57), Jonathan Williams (60th 17:02), Jacob Nelson (63rd 17:06), Paul Wright (65th 17:12), Jared Carlson (67th 17:15), and Ryan Bell (72nd 17:26).
"The men looked very good today, especially in the early stages of the race," said Taylor. "Last year they finished sixth out of 11 teams. This year they moved up two spots in a larger field. That improvement was the result of being aggressive and a willingness to take some chances. Their effort was very impressive. It was a great start to the season, but it is only a start. We have a lot of work to do and every guy on this team can improve dramatically."

Both Bison teams next compete in two weeks at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic. The September 15th race will be contested on the same Vaughn's Gap course, however the men will expand their race to 8K and the women will race the 5K distance.
