The Lipscomb Men's and Women's Cross Country teams will open the 2008 season Saturday at the Mid-America Opener, hosted by the University of Evansville.
The women will race 4000 meters at 10 a.m. The men will follow with a 6000 meters race.
"We expect this to be a low key meet to start the season," said head coach Bill Taylor. "Louisville is there, and is usually nationally ranked, but there are only a handful of teams competing, so it should be a nice way to start the season and see where we are."
Eighteen men will travel to Evansville to compete. Top returners Ryan Chastain and Jordan Wilson should lead the way for the Bisons, while newcomers Nathan Brame and Benton Reed are expected to contribute as well.
"The men are deep and talented, but very young," said Taylor. "I really don't know what to expect yet, or who is likely to step up. It's pretty wide open right now. We took a significant hit when Jared Carlson was lost for the season, but we have a lot of guys that can step up."
Sixteen women are expected to race for the Lady Bisons Saturday. Carolyn Latham and Caitlin Anderson have been the top returners, with several other returners close behind. Top newcomers are Ashley Lehman and Meagan Hoar.
"I really feel that the women's program is getting better fast," Taylor said. " Saturday will be fun as we start to define ourselves for this season. The women are very close in talent, so it is impossible to know who will finish where for us."
