Former basketball coach Don Meyer has leg amputated

Northern State University officials announced on Friday that doctors at Avera McKennen Hospital in Sioux Falls successfully amputated Meyer’s left leg below the knee.

Meyer’s left leg was severely injured following a traffic accident on Friday, September 5, 2008.

The family is grateful that the doctors moved in this direction. Coach has been in a tremendous amount of pain due to his injury. He has a great attitude and was feeling a great sense of relief after making the decision with his family on Thursday.

Sept. 7, 2008 -   Carmen and family would like to thank EVERYONE for their thoughts, prayers and wishes the last few days. The family would especially like to thank all of those who responded so quickly to the accident. Coach Meyer had another surgery on his leg Thursday morning. Time and rest are very important thing for him right now. Coach is working towards getting out of intensive care - but needs rest in order to accomplish this. The family thanks everyone for their "team effort" and is especially grateful for the emails, wishes and prayers.

Sept. 11, 2008 - Northern State University Officials will hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m. today at Great Western Bank, 100 North Phillips Ave 6th Floor, Sioux Falls to discuss the condition of Men’s Basketball Coach Don Meyer. Meyer was injured in a car accident while traveling to a team retreat on Sep. 5.

Sept. 15, 2008 - Coach Meyer continues to in a step down room. Rest is critical right now for him and the family appreciates all who are sending their wishes via email and cards. As coach continues to get stronger the family is visiting with doctors and specialists about options going forward. Thanks to everyone for their prayers.

Sept. 17, 2008 - Coach Meyer remains in a step down room. They are in the process of decreasing his pain medication – this is making him a bit uncomfortable but he continues to focus on the journey in front of him. Coach has been looking at the paper today and finding articles that he has Carmen sending out to folks with a personal note.

Immediate focus continues to be on the leg, and monitoring blood counts and a blood clot in his arms.

Coach’s daughter Brittany arranged for a picture of Governor Palin to be delivered to his room. Coach was pleased. His comment to folks continues to be “Pray for him and Vote for Palin.”
