Monday, September 22, 2008The Lady Bisons Softball Team hit the field for their first four games of the fall season this past weekend at the annual Club K Tournament in Hendersonville. The team finished the weekend going 3-1 with nine returners and six new players.
After winning the Atlantic Sun regular season championship last year, the squad was ready to face other teams again.
“It was great to see our new players work with our old ones and get a real perspective on our team,” said coach Kristin Peck.
With a line-up that continued to change pretty drastically throughout the weekend, the Lady Bisons proved they could play with anyone, even after just one week of team practice.
Playing Trevecca in their first game, the Lady Bisons won 6-3 with freshman middle infielder Courtney Billington hitting her first home run in a Lipscomb uniform. Junior shortstop Abby Keese went 3-for-4 while sophomore outfielder Mackenzie Tucker finished 2 for 2.
Junior Alaina Jacobson and freshman Whitney Kiihnl split time on the mound for the win.
The Lady Bisons next faced Lee University out of Cleveland, Ohio. Lee jumped ahead in the first inning scoring three runs. That lead would hold despite Billington hitting two doubles in three trips to the plate. The three runs were all Lee would need for the 3-0 win.
On Sunday Lipscomb started out playing Logan Community College from Carterville, Ill. With Kiihnl and junior Christen Campbell sharing pitching duties, they scattered five hits over seven innings. The Bisons would use seven hits to score seven runs and eventually win 7-4. Junior transfer Abby Lynn Wilson and freshman Caroline Mason both hit their first home runs as Lady Bisons.
For their final game of the tournament, the Lady Bisons faced Lindsey Wilson College out of Columbia, Ky. After falling behind 2-0, the team fought back to score three runs in the third inning and then three runs in the sixth. Winning by a final score of 6-3, Lipscomb had 12 hits in the game, eight of which were doubles. Billington once again led the team going 3 for 3 with two doubles. Redshirt sophomore Christy Grisham and Jacobson split the win for Lipscomb, allowing only four hits.
Both Billington and junior Lauren Dortwegt led the Lady Bisons in hitting over all. Billington Dortwegt led with a .556 average and Billington batted .545. Tucker finished at .429 with Keese and freshman Vanesse Medina both hitting .400. Overall the team finished their first tournament with an impressive batting average of .321.
“It was exciting to see our team is just reloading, not rebuilding,” Keese said. “We have some new players who have already made an impact and will continue to push our program to the level we’ve always wanted it to be at.”
The Lady Bisons continue their fall season this Saturday at home as they host Belmont and Trevecca.
