In that brief moment the Lipscomb Lady Bisons watched victory disappear from their grasp as Jennifer Bowen connected on a jump shot to give North Florida a 52-51 win Thursday night at North Florida Arena in Jacksonville. It was the only time the Lady Bisons trailed in the final 20 minutes.
The game was the Atlantic Sun opener for both teams.
Senior forward Jilian Partin sank four free throws in the final 36 seconds to give the Lady Bisons a 51-47 lead. Bowen connected on a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to make the score 51-50 in favor of the Lady Bisons to set the stage for her winning shot.
Lipscomb's Miriam McAlister went to the line with 11 seconds left and missed the front end of a one-in-one situation.
In the second half the Lady Bisons opened with a 3-point shot by center Katie Rollins for a 31-22 lead on their first possession.
The Lady Bisons led by 10 points on two occasions, but North Florida pulled within six at 35-29 on a fast break lay-up by Willonda Windham with 14:56 left to play.
North Florida pulled within two points with 12:57 left to play when Jennifer Bowen sank a pair of free throws.
The Lady Bisons answered with a lay-up on a fast break by Duerk and a pair of free throws from Rollins for a 39-33 lead.
At 7:55 North Florida once again pulled within two points on a lay-up by Kayla Mobley.
Again, the Lady Bisons quickly answered as Bartsokas made her first shot of the second half for a 41-37 lead with 7:34 left in the game.
North Florida tied the game at 47-47 on a deep 3-pointer by Jadhken Kerr with 2:39 on the clock.
With 1:18 North Florida took possession of the ball, but the Lady Bisons forced the home team into a shot clock violation.
The Lady Bisons led 28-22 at the half. It was the first time this season the Lady Bisons have held the advantage after the first 20 minutes of play.
The Lady Bisons trailed 19-18 in the first half when Bartsokas hit a 3-pointer for a 21-19 lead with 4:59 left before intermission. Bartsokas led all scorers in the first half with 12 points, including two-of-four shooting from the 3-point range.
The shot by Bartsokas started a 10-3 run by the Lady Bisons.
The Lady Bisons, 2-5, 0-1 in the A-Sun, have not won on the road this season in three tries. North Florida is 2-3 overall, 1-0 in the conference.
Saturday the Lady Bisons will play Jacksonville in their second A-Sun game of the season. They close out the pre-Christmas schedule Tuesday morning in Evansville in a non-conference game.
