Saturday, January 31, 2009The Lipscomb Lady Bisons played Saturday afternoon at Stetson without head coach Frank Bennett on the sidelines.
Bennett stayed at the hotel, suffering from stomach problems. The Lady Bisons lost to Stetson in an Atlantic Sun game at the Edmunds Center in DeLand, Fla. The victory ended a five-game losing streak for Stetson.
For the second game in a row the Lady Bisons started off strong, only to fall behind as the game progressed.
Lady Bisons sophomore guard Jenna Bartsokas stole the ball and scored on a lay-up for the first points of the game 1:48 in the first half.
A lay-up by freshman center Clair Waggener at 15L49 and a jump shot by freshman forward Brittany Duerk at 13:56 kept the Lady Bisons ahead by four.
With 10:36 remaining in the first half sophomore guard Miaca Bowman connected on a 3-point shot to give the Lady Bisons a 16-10 advantage.
A pair of free throws by sophomore forward Cree Nix gave the Lady Bisons an 18-10 lead with 9:28 left to play before intermission.
But Stetson started to pick away at the Lady Bisons lead. With 46 seconds remaining in the first half Kelly Ellison’s jumper gave Stetson a 24-23 lead.
The Lady Bisons would pull within two points of Stetson, 34-32, with 16:31 left to play in the game on a 3-point shot by forward Jilian Partin. That was the closest the Lady Bisons would be to Stetson the rest of the way.
Partin led the Lady Bisons with 13 points. Freshman forward Anna Bowers chipped in with 11.
Duerk led the Lady Bisons with eight rebounds. It was a season-high for Duerk and the first time she has been the rebounding leader.
Stetson placed three players in double figures. Guard Tierra Brown led the way with a game-high 17 points. Forwards Jessica Conner and Ashli Jackson each added 12 points. Conner also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
The Lady Bisons are 4-17 overall, 2-10 in the conference. Their next game is at Campbell Feb. 5.
Stetson is 8-14 overall, 5-8 in the A-Sun.
