Sunday, February 22, 2009Freshman pitcher Whitney Kiihnl pitched 10 innings and struck out 15 batters as the Lady Bisons split two games with host Georgia State on the way to the championship in the Panther Invitational Sunday at Bob Heck Stadium in Atlanta.
After losing the first game with Georgia State 11-6, the Lady Bisons came back strong in the championship game for a 4-1 win.
Shortstop Abby Keese and left fielder Caroline Mason each hit home runs in the title game. Mason led the Lady Bisons with two runs batted in on her home run in the fourth inning.
The Lady Bisons scored one run in the second, two in the fourth and one in the sixth.
In game one Keese, Mason and center fielder Lauren Dortwegt each had two hits.
Mason and Dortwegt also each drove in two runs. Dortwegt had the big hit of the game for the Lady Bisons with a triple. Mason and second baseman Courtney Billington each had a double.
Alaina Jacobson started the game. She pitched 1.1 innings and gave up five hits and seven runs, three of them earned. She did not walk or strike out a batter.
Christy Grisham entered the game in the second and pitched 1.2 innings. She allowed three runs, all earned, on three hits. She also walked two batters.
Kiihnl closed out the game on the mound. In three innings she gave up two hits and one earned run. She struck out seven and walked one.
The Lady Bisons are 6-3. Georgia State is 4-6.
