Friday, May 01, 2009The Friday night game between the Lipscomb Bisons and the Belmont Bruins has been postponed due to the rainy and stormy weather.
The game will be played Saturday at 4 p.m. as part of a doubleheader at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.
Saturday afternoon three former standout Lipscomb baseball players, Buddy Harston (1974), Phil Stinson(1977) and Jeff Guy (1981), will be inducted into the Lipscomb Athletics Hall of Fame at a special lunch.
Starting junior left-handed pitcher Rex Brothers is 4-5, 3-4 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. He will be on the mound Saturday in game one.
Brothers is first in the Atlantic Sun Conference in strikeouts with 101, a new personal season record and an all-time school record in the NCAA era. He had 97 last season when he was the strikeout leader in the conference. He had 93 his freshman season. He holds down the top three spots in strikeouts on the school’s all-time list in the NCAA era. Brothers is third in batters caught looking on strikeouts with 22.
He has pitched 68.2 innings, first in the A-Sun overall. Brothers is tied for first in the conference in opposing batting average (.200). He is fourth in ERA (3.01). In A-Sun games only he is first in strikeouts (73), third in ERA (2.82), second in opposing batting average (.206) and third in innings pitched (51).
Brothers is close to the all-time best opposing batting average on the team. Chris Burnett is the overall leader, holding teams to a .202 batting average in 1977.
In the NCAA national rankings Brothers is second in strikeouts and seventh in strikeouts per nine innings pitched (13.23). He is 30th in hits allowed per nine innings (6.68).
Brothers has been projected as a first round selection in this year’s Major League Draft by Baseball America, The Sporting News and several other publications.
Junior right-hander Josh Smith, 4-4, 4.43 ERA, will start game two.
Overall in the A-Sun Smith is third in strikeouts (73), first in batters striking out looking (26), fourth in innings pitched (65) and sixth in opponent batting average (.235). In A-Sun games only Smith is eighth in opposing batting average (.243), sixth in innings pitched (48), fourth in strikeouts (55).
Senior right-hander Brandon McClurg (4-3, 4.17 ERA) will start Sunday’s game.
McClurg is eighth overall in the A-Sun in ERA (4.17) and seventh in opponent batting average (.243). In A-Sun games only he is fourth in ERA (2.87), eighth in innings pitched (47) and ninth in opposing batting average (.244).
Brothers, Smith and McClurg have each made 10 starts this season.
The 1959 baseball team will hold a reunion prior to the start of that game. Team members will also throw out the first ball.
