Tuesday, May 12, 2009The Lipscomb Bisons closed out the home portion of the regular season on a losing note in a 9-6 loss to Austin Peay Tuesday night at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.
It was the second loss of the season to the Governors from the Ohio Valley Conference. The Bisons lost 6-4 in Clarksville April 7.
Both teams substituted liberally with 36 players entering the game, including 11 pitchers. Austin Peay used 19 players. The Bisons played 17.
Austin Peay scored one run in the fourth, three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh.
The Bisons struck first in the game with one run in the third inning. With two outs Ryan Wilson reached base on a bunt single. Branden Cadavid singled to the shortstop and was thrown out at second while Wilson scored.
In the seventh the Bisons added four more in the seventh. Allen Bolden singled through the right side to start the inning. He went to second on passed ball. Tennyson Dodd was hit by a pitch. Logan Hostettler hit a ground out to the shortstop, but moved Bolden and Dodd up a base. Antonio Butler singled to center to score both Bolden and Dodd. With two outs Cadavid drove a double down the left field line to bring Butler and Wilson home.
The Bisons added one more in the eighth inning. Bolden opened the inning with a high pop up that Austin Peay’s shortstop could not get a handle on as it fell to earth. Dodd slammed a double down the left field line that moved Bolden to third. Chandler Wicks grounded out to second, but Bolden scored on the play.
Cadavid had a team-high three runs batted in. He also had two hits for his 15th multi-hit game of the season. Butler posted his eighth multiple-RBI game, tying him for second on the team in that category.
Dodd extended his hitting streak to 12 games, his longest of the season and the second longest on the team. Cadavid has a six-game hitting streak.
The Bisons used five pitchers in the game. Davey Hackett started and threw five innings, his longest outing of the season. He allowed eight hits and four runs, all earned. He walked two and struck out three.
Charles Williams threw one inning, striking out one batter. Josh Cotham also pitched one inning, but gave up three hits and two runs, both earned. He struck out one. Jerry Young threw two-thirds of an inning. He allowed three runs, none of them earned. He did not give up a hit, but he walked one and struck out two. Jordan Baron closed out the game and did not give up a hit or a run in the final 1.1 innings.
Hackett (0-3) was credited with the loss. Austin Peay used six pitchers with Jeremy Dobbs (3-3) earning the win.
The Bisons are 21-30 overall. Austin Peay is 21-28.
The Bisons travel to Johnson City for a three-game Atlantic Sun series with ETSU to end the regular season. Game times are 6 p.m. both Thursday and Friday and noon Saturday.
