Friday, September 18, 2009The Lady Bisons are putting their Atlantic Sun unbeaten streak on the line this weekend in Florida.
Friday at 5 p.m. the Lady Bisons (6-3, 3-0) will face Stetson (0-9, 0-3) in Deland Fla. Saturday night at 6 they will be in Fort Myers, Fla., to face Florida Gulf Coast (5-5, 4-0) in what has been billed by the conference at the Atlantic Sun Match of the Week.
“Any road weekend is big, especially in a round-robin format,” said Lady Bisons coach Brandon Rosenthal. “You have got to find ways to pick up victories on the road.”
The Lady Bisons will take a bus to Fort Myers after the game in Stetson, a four-hour drive.
“We will sleep in a little bit Saturday,” said Rosenthal. “You hate to play and then drive. It’s not easy, especially with the caliber of the teams.”
The Lady Bisons have opened the A-Sun portion of the season with match wins over Belmont, North Florida and Jacksonville, all by 3-0 scores. They won four of their last five matches.
“Everybody is literally jockeying for position right now,” said Rosenthal. “We have more teams eligible for the tournament than we have ever had before. The sooner you can secure a spot in the tournament or distance yourself from the rest of the pack it gives you a little bit of freedom to take that concern out your mind.”
The Lady Bisons will be fighting Florida Gulf Coast for first place in the conference. The match with Stetson doesn’t have the same billing, but Rosenthal stresses it is equally as important.
“Stetson poses some problems for us,” said Rosenthal. “It becomes one of those things where we have to execute and take care of our side of the court.
“Our group is very mature and very focused. They know they have to take care of Stetson before they get to Florida Gulf Coast.”
