“It is always nice to clinch first,” said head coach Brandon Rosenthal. “But the ultimate goal is to win the A-Sun championship. Our team is pretty focused on winning it all.”
The win makes the Lady Bisons 14-0 in A-Sun action and puts them 2.5 games ahead of second place Jacksonville.
Lipscomb came out of the gate with a strong offensive attack. In the first set the Lady Bisons had 15 kills against three errors and in the second set they had 16 kills to two errors.
“I thought we did a tremendous job defensively which opened up our offensive and was really pleased with what we did in those first two sets,” said Rosenthal.
Lipscomb displayed a strong, balanced defense with three players recording double-digit digs. Junior Alex Kelly had a match high 14 digs while junior Jake Pease had 12 and sophomore Katie Rose added 11.
“This year we have a dig-by-committee plan and I would much rather have our current situation over just one person,” said Rosenthal. “Tonight we did a good job with controlling what happened.”
Pease, the Lady Bisons setter, was praised by Rosenthal for her ability to run the Lipscomb offense.
"She makes this offense goes. I can’t say enough about her and what she does. She doesn’t get enough credit and she is a really special player. She makes everybody else look so good.”
Pease was credited with 40 assists and five kills to go along with her 12 digs. After a 6-2 run by Florida Gulf Coast to make the score 23-21 in the third set, Pease notched kills on back-to-back dumps over the net to give Lipscomb the match win.
Kelly led the Lady Bisons with 15 kills and a .429 attack percentage. Freshman Kaycee Green had 13 kills and a .308 attack percentage.
Senior Erin Pierce provided valuable support for Lipscomb in many different areas. She finished with six kills in 14 attempts, two assists, a service ace, and seven digs.
“She is the X-Factor,” said Rosenthal. “We need her to do a lot of little things right and she continues to do that. She played a great match tonight.”
The Lady Bisons return to action Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. as they face off with Stetson in Allen Arena.
Lipscomb improves to 19-3, 14-0 in A-Sun action while Florida Gulf Coast drops to 11-10, 10-4 in the A-Sun.
