Valerie Bronson scored 19 points and had nine rebounds but the Lipscomb Lady Bisons were not able to stop the one-two punch of Talnesha Kee and Rene Rector as the duo combined for 43 points in Winston-Salem State’s 76-63 victory over the Lady Bisons Friday afternoon in the Morehead State Invitational in Morehead, Ky.
The Lipscomb defense was not able to stop the Winston-Salem State offense in the first half allowing the Lady Rams to shoot 51.7 percent from the field and 6-of-12 from the 3-point line.
"Our defensive intensity in the first half probably cost us the game," said Lipscomb head coach Frank Bennett. "We weren't communicating well on switches and they got open looks and second shots that allowed them to gain confidence."
Lipscomb’s largest lead of the game was five points (25-20) with 8:56 left in the first half. Winston-Salem State went on a 13-2 run over the next 4:25 seconds to take a 33-27 lead. Winston-Salem State took a seven point lead into halftime.
Winston-Salem State opened the second half with all cylinders firing going on a 14-5 run to take a 54-38 lead with 12:27.
The Lady Bisons found the lead insurmountable and were not able to cut the lead into single digits.
Kee scored 22 points to lead Winston-Salem State. Rector had 21 points.
Jenna Bartsokas posted 10 points before fouling out with 56 seconds left in the game.
Clair Waggener made her first appearance of the year returning from an injury. She did not score, but grabbed two rebounds in six minutes of action.
Lipscomb held a 35-31 advantage on the boards. Bronson had a team high nine boards. Vontisha Woods lead Winston-Salem State with 11 rebounds.
"Valerie Bronson hit the boards really hard and scored in the post well tonight," said Bennett.
Lipscomb shot 24-of-59 (40.7 percent) from the field and 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) from the 3-point line. The Lady Bisons were 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
Lipscomb has a quick turnaround before facing tournament host Morehead State tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. (CT).
"Morehead is probably the best team we will play so far," said Bennett. "They are very athletic and have a lot of shooters. We will need to step up against them."
