Saturday, January 30, 2010At the University of Washington Invite Friday night, Ryan Chastain knocked more than 25 seconds off the Lipscomb University Indoor 5000m record, posting an all-time 5000m best of 14:53.10. Ryan finished 5th in a race he entered ranked 23rd.
This is the first time any Lipscomb runner has broken 15 minutes for 5000m in indoor or outdoor track.
“I hate putting someone in the 5000m this early in the season,” said head coach Bill Taylor. “Ryan only has two and a half weeks of quality workouts under his belt. However, Ryan and I talked a few weeks ago and felt that since this is one of the best indoor meets in the country the 5K was his best opportunity.
“It worked out well. He didn’t look as smooth as he usually does, but he really ran smart and kept moving up. I don’t think he could be expected to look smooth so early in the season.
“This gives Ryan a ton of confidence for his senior season. He ran a 4:14 mile last week to anchor the DMR in his first meet of the year, and this week a big PR in the 5K. It’s going to be an exciting season for Ryan and the men’s and women’s track teams.
“Every season this program gets better, and each year it is happening on a larger scale and at a faster rate. We are building the program I envisioned when I arrived. It’s a process and it’s going as planned. We are getting there fast.
“I believe Ryan will break 14 this year and I expect to have at least 5 more guys in the 14’s. My goal is for every men’s and women’s distance record to fall this season…800m to 10,000m.”
