Monday, February 01, 2010BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Lipscomb held Campbell scoreless in the last 4:31 of Monday's contest but the Lady Bisons were unable to complete a comeback falling 60-58.
Campbell (12-9, 7-5 A-Sun) missed their last four attempts from the field and their final five free throw attempts, including the front end of three one-and-one opportunities.
Junior Valerie Bronson had an opportunity to tie the game for Lipscomb (4-19, 2-11 A-Sun) in the closing seconds driving coast-to-coast but she was unable to convert her layup attempt with about 4 seconds left.
Lipscomb took a 7-0 run to open the game with a three by freshman Hannah Phillips and two free throws and a layup by Brittany Duerk.
Campbell responded with a 13-2 run to take a four-point lead at the 12:56 mark. The teams battled the rest of the first half with four ties and seven lead changes.
Tonisha Baker hit a jumper from the left side as time expired in the first half to send Campbell to the locker room with a 36-35 lead. The Lady Bisons would never regain the lead.
Lipscomb could only score four points over a stretch of 9:12 until Valerie Bronson hit a three with 9:17 left in the game to bring the Lady Bisons within nine, 53-44. Lipscomb missed 12 of 14 shots during the stretch and had five turnovers.
The Lady Bisons shot 7-of-29 for 24.1 percent in the second half. They were 17-of-57 for 29.8 percent on the evening. Campbell was 24-of-66 from the floor for 36.4 percent.
Phillips joined Bronson in leading the Lady Bisons with 13 points each. Sophomore Anna Bowers added 10 points.
Campbell held a 50-40 advantage on the boards. Bronson led Lipscomb with seven rebounds.
Ashley Williamson paced Campbell with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Lauren Yesh added ten points.
The Lady Bisons are back in action Saturday in Allen Arena against North Florida. The game is set to tip at 1 p.m.
