Friday, March 19, 2010The Lipscomb Lady Bisons rallied from a 5-0 deficit but fell short in a 5-3 loss to No.12-ranked California Friday night in the Hawaiian Spring Fling in Honolulu.
The Lady Bisons finished 1-2 against California in the tournament.
The Lady Bisons scored two runs in the fifth inning. Mackenzie Tucker singled to the pitcher. Kiihnl singled to the pitcher. Tucker moved to third and Kiihnl went to second on a ground out to first base by Lauren Dortwegt. With two out Courtney Billington doubled to left center to bring both Tucker and Kiihnl home.
In the seventh Tucker reached base on an error by the third baseman. Dortwegt drove her home with a double to right center.
California scored one run in the first, three runs in the third and one run in the fifth. Valerie Arioto hit a solo home run in the fifth. Frani Echavvaria slammed a solo home run to lead off the second inning and a two-RBI double in the third.
The Lady Bisons collected seven hits in the game, each by a different batter. California had eight hits.
Whitney Kiihnl started on the mound for the Lady Bisons. In 4.1 innings she allowed six hits and five runs, all earned. She walked two and struck out four.
Christen Campbell pitched the final 2.2 innings. She gave up two hits and struck out two. She did not allow a run. The Lady Bisons are 20-6. California is 22-5.
The Lady Bisons close out the Spring Fling Saturday at 5 p.m. when they play tournament host Hawaii for the third time.
