Friday, April 09, 2010It’s a long time until fall, but the Lipscomb Lady Bisons volleyball team isn’t sitting around enjoying the pretty weather.
The Lady Bisons were both the regular season and tournament champions in the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2009, including a 22-0 conference record. Winning is always on the minds of the Lady Bisons, but the spring is a time for development.
As major test in measuring how far the team has progressed this season will be Saturday’s Southeast College-Junior Invitational at A-Game at 215 Gothic Court in Franklin. The Lady Bisons will play Georgia State at 8 a.m. followed by Tennessee at 10:30 a.m. They will finish the day with a match against Auburn at 1 p.m.
Other teams participating are Austin Peay, Belmont and Southern Mississippi.
“This has given us something to look forward to and prepare for,” Lady Bisons coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “We have given our players a lot of reps.”
Some of the moves are Kelsey Neumann playing on the right side instead of in the middle. Katie Rose is in the middle instead of playing libero. Transfer Charlyn Ursell is new on the right side.
Amanda Rhein and Kory Honel are playing on the outside with Meghan Hinemeyer sidelined for the spring.
“There are high expectations, but we need to have some other people play and get some experience,” Rosenthal said. “All of these people are getting their opportunities. They need as many reps as possible and they have done well.
“Some people would say that we have to win all of our matches this spring. I don’t think that is true. If we are doing that then we are not playing matches this spring for the right reasons.”
