Saturday, September 18, 2010The Lipscomb Bisons finished fifth out of thirteen teams in the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic Saturday morning at Percy Warner Park. The Bisons trailed three regionally-ranked teams in Tennessee, UT-Chattanooga and Belmont.
Tim Muller (SO – Denver, Colo.) led the Bisons with an 18th place finish in a time of 26:13. His time is a new Lipscomb school record for the Vaughn’s Gap course.
Isaiah Greer (SO – Johnson City, Tenn.) finished second for Lipscomb, finishing 24th in 26:26. Geoff Musick (SO – Nashville, Tenn.), Mike Yang (SO – Oceanside, N.Y.) and Hunter Hethcoat (JR – Franklin, Tenn.) rounded out the Lipscomb top five with 26th, 43rd and 60th place finishes in 26:43, 27:02 and 27:36 respectively.
As a team, Lipscomb dropped more than two minutes off the best ever team time for the Vaughn’s Gap course and almost 30 seconds off the average time record.
“The men had a very good day,” Bisons’ coach Bill Taylor said. “They were better than ever before in terms of times, team time and other stats. Where we are struggling is with our gaps and our No. 5-No. 7 runners. If the guys stick together and tighten things up, they are capable of anything. If they stay spread out and don’t work together, then we will be a good team, but not a great team this year.”
Taylor wants to see the Bisons’ top four run closer together in addition to finding a consistent No. 5 runner.
“A cross country team is only as good as its fifth runner,” Taylor said. “I know they can figure this out. However, I also kind of feel like we are a recruiting class away from having the men at the same level as our women’s team.
“ I know how to build a program and how to help distance runners improve dramatically. We’ve got an amazing young core group here. Our top four are sophomores and they want it bad. We need a good class of motivated guys who want to step in and help this men’s program get to the next level.”
Other finishers for Lipscomb:
Ashton Fisher 27:41, Ben Wright 27:53, Benton Reed 28:00, Jeff Hoover 28:06, Jonathan Williams 28:29, Cormac Carolan 28:54, Justin Weise 29:07, Andrew Jones 29:36, Aaron Todd 29:55, Cliff Denton 30:12, Philip Brasher 30:44, Jonathan Carmody 34:17.
The Lipscomb men’s and women’s teams will take next weekend off, before returning to action on Oct. 3 with a split squad. The top men and women will travel to Salem, Ore., to participate in the Willamette Invite, while the rest of the team will take a drive up I-65 to compete in the Louisville Classic.
