CLARKSVILLE - The Lipscomb Bisons expected a barnburner at Austin Peay and that is exactly what they got.
The Bisons (5-2) capitalized on a couple of key steals in the final minute to hold on for a 73-70 win. It was the home opener for Austin Peay (5-5) at the Winfield Dunn Center.
The Bisons beat Austin Peay from the Ohio Valley Conference 104-101 in overtime Nov. 18. The home-and-away sweep was the first for Austin Peay since Western Kentucky did it during the 2001-2002 season.
The Bisons led 30-28 at halftime. Center Adnan Hodzic has managed only two points in the first 20 minutes.
“I did a poor job in the first half of getting Adnan the ball,” coach Scott Sanderson said.
Guard Josh Slater was the most active and consistent player for the Bisons, scoring a game-high 23 points. Slater also had eight rebounds.
Hodzic managed to score 11 points in the second half to extend his double figures scoring streak to 64 games. Hodzic also pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds. It was the first time since Jan. 24, 2008 that Hodzic brought down more rebounds than points scored. He had three points and four rebounds against Mercer.
Also in double figures for the Bisons were Brandon Barnes with 14 and Brandon Brown with 10.
The game remained extremely close throughout the contest. There were 14 lead changes and the score was tied on 13 occurrences.
Lipscomb seemed to maintain control of the game for most of the second half until the Govs held the Bisons to one basket over three minutes and took a 67-65 lead with 1:54 to play. The Bisons turned the ball over on the next possession giving APSU an opportunity to take its largest lead of the half.
But after a missed trey and missed follow-up attempt, the Bisons dashed down the floor for a layup by Brandon Brown to tie the game. After the Govs brought the ball past half court, Brown stripped John Fraley and laid the ball in to give Lipscomb the two point advantage, 69-67.
After a missed jumper by Austin Peay, Slater was fouled with 27.6 seconds left. He hit both to secure win.
Lipscomb shot 50 percent from the floor while holding the Govs to 40.9 percent. The Bisons shot 57.7 percent (15-of-26) in the second period.
Tyshwan Edmondson paced Austin Peay with 21 points and eight rebounds.
The loss marked the first time Austin Peay lost a home-and-away series in the same season since the 2001-02 season when Western Kentucky swept the Govs.
The Bisons are 3-0 against OVC teams this season. They play at Tennessee Tech Saturday night at 7 in Cookeville, the fourth game against an OVC team this season.
