Monday, January 03, 2011DELAND, FLA. – Senior guard Jenna Bartsokas hit five three-pointers and scored 26 points as the Lipscomb Lady Bisons defeated the Stetson Hatters 73-72 in overtime at the Edmunds Center Monday evening.
Lipscomb remains at the top of the Atlantic Sun Conference standings improving to 3-0 in A-Sun action for the first time since the 2004-05 season. The Lady Bisons are 6-6 overall topping last year’s five wins.
Junior guard Anna Bowers had 17 points connecting on four treys as the Lady Bisons made 14 three-pointers, their highest total since connecting on 15 against Mercer on Jan. 11, 2007. Lipscomb shot 45.2 percent from downtown.
Lipscomb closed the first half on a 9-0 run to take a 31-28 halftime lead.
Lipscomb took a 46-39 lead, its largest of the game, on a three by Bowers at the 15:41 mark. The Lady Bisons equaled this lead four minutes later on a three by sophomore wing Hannah Phillips.
Stetson responded with a 9-0 run to go up 54-52 with 8:35 to play. Stetson held a 65-61 lead with 3:04 left, but did not score for the remainder of regulation.
With the game tied at 65 and 20 second remaining, senior guard Miaca Bowman stole the ball from the Hatters tipping it to Bowers. She lost the ball out of bounds last touched by Stetson. Lipscomb opted to take the final shot. Bartsokas missed a 12-foot jumper as time expired forcing overtime.
Overtime also came down to the final seconds. Stetson tied the contest at 72 on a layup with 34.1 seconds left. With the shot clock down to three seconds and game clock at seven seconds, Phillips attempted a 17-footer and was fouled on the attempt.
She missed the first free throw, but connected on the second to put Lipscomb up 73-72. Stetson did not attempt a shot as the clock expired.
Phillips finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Bowers and freshman post Jess Reece also grabbed six boards each. Stetson held a 45-38 rebounding advantage.
Sasha Sims led Stetson with 13 points while Victoria McGowan and Jessica Conner had 12 each.
