Sunday, January 09, 2011The Lipscomb men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the 2011 season Saturday at the Ed Temple Classic at Tennessee State University.
The top highlight of the meet was the performance of the Lady Bisons’ distance medley relay team. The members of the team; sophomore Amanda Twigg and freshmen Alyssa Miller, Katie Bunker and Dani Walker, won the event with a time of 12:17.49.
"It was a great start to the season,” Lipscomb track and field coach Bill Taylor said. “The DMR women ran awesome! “
“Their time was a new school record, breaking the record set last year at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships by a then all-freshman team of Priya Pappu, Sara Stephens, Emily Longden and Amanda Twigg,” said Taylor.
Last year’s team members earned all-conference honors for the performance.
Taylor said that the Bisons and Lady Bisons decided to sit out all of the long distance events
“We ran our middle distance athletes just in relays,” Taylor said. “Sprints, jumps, hurdles and throws did a great job as well.”
Tucker Peabody made the podium in the 200 meters.
“I think that's the first short sprint podium finish since I've been at Lipscomb,” Taylor said. “I really felt everyone competed hard in every event.
“It was apparent that most got some work done over the break. We saw that a few probably didn't do enough during the break, and will have to pay the price now, but the effort was very good and there is a lot of excitement on the team about the upcoming season.”
The Bisons and Lady Bisons will return to Tennessee State Jan. 29 for the TSU Invite.
“We have three weeks until the next meet, which will give us some great quality training time,” Taylor said. “We'll sit our long distance runners out of that meet too, but we will let many of our middle distance runners see where they are in open events.”
