Sunday, April 10, 2011The Lipscomb baseball team outhit East Tennessee State on Sunday but a couple of defensive miscues by the Bisons led to a six-run, sixth-inning for ETSU as the Bucs defeated the Bisons 8-3 in the series finale at Cardinal Park Sunday.
With the loss, the Bisons dropped their sixth consecutive game, falling to 11-21 overall and 3-9 in the Atlantic Sun.
The Bucs (20-9 overall, 11-5 A-Sun) jumped out to an early two-run lead in the bottom of the first, collecting three hits and taking advantage of a hit-by-pitch and base on ball to chase Lipscomb starter Chris Nunn after one inning.
The Bisons cut into ETSU’s lead in the top of the second when Kyle Henry laced a double down the right-field line to score Tennyson Dodd, who led off the inning with a double of his own. Henry’s double made it a 2-1 game.
Trailing 2-1, Lipscomb scored two runs on four straight two-out singles in the third inning to take its first lead of the game. Richie Goodenow, Josh Chism, Lee Wilson and Dodd all recorded hits in the inning with Chism and Wilson driving in a run apiece.
Lipscomb continued to lead 3-2 through the middle innings as Mike Grace kept the Bucs’ hitters at bay with four stellar scoreless innings of middle relief. Grace allowed one hit and four walks with seven strikeouts in four innings.
With the Bisons clinging to a 3-2 lead, the Bucs put the game away in the sixth, scoring six runs on three hits while sending 10 batters to the plate in the inning.
ETSU’s Burton allowed three runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts in 8.1 innings to earn his first win of the season on Sunday.
Dannie Strable (2-5) was handed the loss Sunday, allowing three runs on one hit while facing only three batters.
Goodenow paced the Bisons offensively Sunday, going 3-for-5 with a run scored while Chism, Williams and Dodd each had two hits apiece.
The Bisons will return to the friendly confines of Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium on Tuesday for a midweek game against Alabama A&M (6-23). First pitch against the Bulldogs will be at 6 p.m.
Following Tuesday’s game, the Bisons will travel west to Martin, Tenn., to face UT-Martin in non-conference action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Lipscomb will host USC Upstate next weekend at Ken Dugan Field on Friday and Saturday.
Friday’s game will start at 3 p.m, while Saturday will be a double-header. Game one of the doubleheader will start at Noon with the second game starting around 3 p.m.
