NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb’s men’s soccer squad returned to campus, Wednesday, reconvening for fall practice in preparation for the 2011 season.
The Bisons are coming off a 10-9 season in 2010, with Garret Pettis (first team) and Miguel DaSilva (second team) earning all-conference honors. Defender Kevin Barbar was named to the all-freshmen squad as well.
DaSilva and keeper Brent McGee were named to the All-Tournament team for last season’s A-Sun Tournament. McGee made 15 saves and allowed only two goals, leading the Bisons to the semifinals for the third time in four years, while DaSilva scored two goals and assisted on two other Bison scores.
The departed DaSilva became the first Lipscomb soccer player to be named to the NSCAA All-Region second team.
Pettis was named to the preseason all-conference squad by a vote of A-Sun coaches. In 2010, he scored eight goals (fourth-highest in program history) and accumulated 19 points (fourth-highest in program history). He stands just eight goals away from tying DaSilva for most all-time in school history, and just one point away from tying Ben Page for second-most all-time.
McGee’s 2010 was stellar, where he finished with the second-best single-season goals against average (1.69) and fourth-most saves (75). This season he will attempt to moved up the all-time rankings in saves (130; 15 behind Bryan Ayer for third all-time) and minutes (3,284; 181 behind JD Murphy for first all-time).
The 2011 edition of the squad returns McGee, Pettis and Barbar, as well as a host of contributors from last fall. Sophomore Joey Chiappetta assisted on seven goals in 2010, second-most in a single season.
Sophomore Nick Bibb and senior Andrew Chamberlain combined for four goals and four assists in 2010, and will be counted on to continue an offensive surge that led to 35 goals last season, second-most in a single season in school history.
In front of McGee will be a veteran crop of defenders that started 59 matches in 2010. Barbar will be joined by converted keeper Isaac Pile and Ethan Summers as full-time starters from last season, while Matt Shanklin made eight starts on the backline. Together, those four contributed three goals and three assists in 2010.
The Bisons will travel to UAB, August 20, for a preseason match before opening the regular season at home Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. against Georgia State.
