NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s soccer team will keep on the road this weekend, traveling to Tennessee Chattanooga for a Friday evening tilt with the Lady Moccasins at 6 p.m. The Lady Bisons will then head to Mississippi for a match at SWAC foe Jackson State, Sunday, beginning at 2 p.m.
Lipscomb (1-2-1) picked up its first victory of the campaign, last Friday, in a 3-1 victory over Nicholls State. Senior Meghan McGuire scored her second goal of the young season, while senior Kirsten Heikkinen and junior Courtney Williams scored their first goals of the campaign.
Sunday, the Lady Bisons dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker, on the road, to Tennessee Martin. The offense sputtered in that contest, with a mere five shots on goal (three for the Lady Skyhawks, two by Lipscomb) being accumulated by both squads.
The Lady Bisons played a bit shorthanded Sunday, with a myriad of issues affecting the availability of a large group of players. Six players played the full 90 minutes against Tennessee Martin, but head coach Jon Ireland believes most players will be back at full strength this weekend.
Chattanooga enters the match with a 1-1-1 record, with a loss to Austin Peay sandwiched around a victory over Tennessee Tech (2-1, Aug. 19) and a tie with Gardner-Webb (3-3, Aug. 28).
Junior Becca Smith has paced the offense in the early going, netting a goal against Gardner-Webb and two more against Tennessee Tech for the team lead.
The Lady Bisons defeated UT Chattanooga to open the 2010 campaign, with McGuire and Hunter Summers netting goals for the Bison. Junior keeper Erin Zerio made six saves in the contest, including one in the games waning moments to preserve the victory.
For the Lady Tigers, they have only played one game in 2011, an 8-0 drubbing at the hands of Ole Miss. Senior Liana Knight earned SWAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, putting two shots on goal against the Rebels for the 2010 SWAC Tournament Champions.
Last season, the Lady Bisons defeated Jackson State, 1-0, via a ninth-minute own goal in Nashville. Zerio picked up the shutout, stopping one shot, while Jackson State’s Allison Lane stopped five in the losing effort.
Lipscomb continues its road tour next weekend at Mississippi State’s Bulldog Classic. Friday, Sep. 9, the Lady Bison take on Southern Miss at 4 p.m. Lipscomb will finish the tournament by taking on host Mississippi State Sunday, Sep. 11, at 2 p.m.
