The Lipscomb women’s soccer team will finish out the non-conference portion of their schedule, this weekend, by hosting Austin Peay (Thursday) and traveling to Cookeville to face off against Tennessee Tech (Sunday). The Lady Bisons will play Austin Peay at 4:30 p.m., tomorrow, on the practice field behind Cofers Chapel Church on the corner of Caldwell Lane and Franklin Pike.
The Lady Bisons were highly successful at last weekend’s Bulldog Classic, defeating Southern Miss, 3-1, and losing a heartbreaker to host Mississippi State, 2-1, in overtime. Erin Zerio, Kelsey Reiman and recently crowned Atlantic Sun Offensive Player of the Week Meghan McGuire were each named to the all-tournament team.
McGuire leads the Bisons offense in goals (four) and points (eight) this season. After scoring just 10 goals all of 2010, the Lipscomb offense has mustered eight tallies through just seven games so far in 2011.
In defeating Southern Miss, 3-1, last Friday the Lady Bisons have scored three or more goals twice this season. It marks the first time in Lipscomb history that the women’s soccer team has scored three or more goals in more than one game during a single season.
Zerio made a season-high nine saves against Mississippi State. She is fourth in the conference in goals against average (1.24) and fifth in saves (33).
Austin Peay brings a high-flying offense, having outscored opponents 29-7 this season. Sisters Tatiana and Natalia Ariza have contributed 13 of those goals, while junior Emily Perkins has added six. The Lady Govs are 5-2, including a 14-0 shellacking of Alabama A&M to kick off the season.
Tennessee Tech enters at 2-5-1, on a three-game losing streak. Jacquie Watkins, Sarah Gawthrop and Kerri Reid have scored two goals apiece, while Becca Toler is responsible for keeping the other team at bay; she’s made 37 saves this season and owns a 1.56 goals against average.
Austin Peay knocked off Lipscomb, 1-0, in 2010 behind a Michelle Johnson goal in the 73rd minute. It has been two years since the Lady Bisons faced Tennessee Tech; in 2009, the Lady Eagles defeated Lipscomb 2-1.
In terms of common opponents, all three of these squads have faced Chattanooga this season. Tennessee Tech opened the season by hosting the Lady Mocs, falling 2-1 on Aug. 19. The Lady Govs traveled to Chattanooga two days later and knocked off the Lady Mocs, 4-0. Lipscomb lost at Chattanooga on Sep. 2, 2-0.
Following this weekend, Lipscomb will open the conference portion of the schedule, traveling to Mercer (Sep. 23, 6 p.m.) and Kennesaw State (Sep. 25, 12 noon) for the opening weekend.
