Lipscomb got a favorable own-goal but couldn’t hold on against Eastern Illinois, ultimately falling to the Panthers 2-1 in Charleston, Thursday evening.
“I saw good things both offensively and defensively,” said head coach Charles Morrow. “Things are coming together, we just didn’t get the result today.”
Eastern Illinois (4-4-0) got on the board early with a 12th-minute goal from the Panthers Will Butler. Tayron Martin and Jake Brillhart assisted on the goal, combining for a cross into the box right in front of the Bisons net and past freshman AJ Schlitt, who made his first career start for the Bisons.
It was the fourth game in a row Lipscomb (1-6-2) has allowed a goal less than 15 minutes into the contest; the Bisons are 0-2-2 in those games.
Lipscomb would get an own goal in the 47th minute after the ball ricocheted off Mike Picinich and past keeper Evan Turner. It marked the second own-goal the Bisons have received in 2011.
“We fell short putting them under pressure tonight,” Morrow said. “We can’t keep getting caught up in bad calls and mistakes; we have to focus on getting the win.”
Butler assisted on Eastern Illinois’ winning goal in the 75th minute. He deflected a corner kick from Chris Boswell to Johnathan Hinds, who put it past Lipscomb’s Brent McGee for the goal.
McGee and Schlitt each played a half for the Bisons; both allowed a goal and made two saves in their 45 minutes of work. McGee also picked up a yellow card, one of three for the Bisons.
The Panthers were whistled for offsides 10 times, compared to one for the Bisons.
“To be honest, it felt like EIU just wanted it a bit more today,” Morrow said. “We had individual performances, but not a strong team one.”
The Bisons will try to rebound Sunday when they travel to SIU-Edwardsville for a 7 p.m. match with the Cougars. Lipscomb begins its conference season next weekend with matches against USC Upstate (Sept. 30, 6 p.m.) and ETSU (Oct. 2, 12 noon).
