NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s soccer team will host Nashville neighbor Belmont for the Bisons first home Atlantic Sun match of 2011, Sunday night at 7 p.m. The Bisons return to the Lipscomb Socccer Complex for the first time in 2011 following the completion of the lighting expansion project.
Lipscomb got a big boost last weekend by defeating then 22nd-ranked ETSU 2-1. Not only was the victory Lipscomb’s first-ever against a ranked team, the win exorcised some of Lipscomb’s demons against the Bucs. ETSU defeated Lipscomb twice in 2010, including the Bisons season-ending loss to ETSU in the A-Sun semifinals.
The Bisons feel better going into this weekend about an offense that had languished through the early parts of the season. Seniors Andrew Chamberlain and Garret Pettis and sophomore Nick Bibb each contributed goals last weekend for the purple-and-gold attack.
Sunday’s match will be a “Coaches vs. Cancer” event; Lipscomb will be raffling off a framed, signed soccer jersey with all proceeds going to fund cancer research. Admission will be $5 (free to Lipscomb students) and inflatable games will be provided for kids. The game will be part of the “BlackOut” weekend, with spectators encouraged to wear black.
Next weekend, the Bisons will continue home action when they take on Jacksonville (Friday, Oct. 14, 7 p.m.) and North Florida (Sunday, Oct. 16, 2 p.m.).

Opponent’s Last Outings
Belmont jumped to the top of the Atlantic Sun standings during the opening week of play, defeating 22nd-ranked ETSU, 3-1, and playing to a scoreless tie with USC Upstate. Juniors Brandon Tarr (two goals against ETSU) and Lou Manning (14 saves, 1 shut-out, earned win over ranked ETSU) earned A-Sun Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week Awards.
Last Time Against This Weekend’s Opponents
Pettis and Joey Chiappetta scored two goals apiece, while Kevin Barbar and Bibb added one each in a 6-2 Lipscomb rout of Belmont, Oct. 14 2010. Chiappetta earned two of his seven assists in this one as well. Lipscomb scored three times in the game’s opening 15 minutes. Brent McGee made four saves to earn the win.
Upset Special: Bisons Knock Off ETSU For First-Ever Win Against Ranked Foe
Bibb and Pettis did the scoring and McGee made three saves to lead Lipscomb to a 2-1 victory against 22nd-ranked ETSU. The Bisons were helped by a handball in the box by ETSU’s Blaike Woodruff inside the 18-yard box, which earned him an ejection and Lipscomb a penalty kick that Pettis converted for the game-winning goal. The victory was the first for Lipscomb over a ranked foe in program history.
Offense Goes Silent in A-Sun Opener at Upstate
Chamberlain scored his season’s first goal, but USC Upstate put two on the board in the first half and added another in the 84th minute to clinch a 3-1 victory. Lipscomb fell despite outshooting the Spartans 20-9, but Upstate’s Jason McCabe made six saves compared to two for McGee.
McGee Among the Elite
McGee has been stellar in his final season at Lipscomb. In addition to being third in the conference in saves (45), the Parkersburg, W. Va. native is 24th nationally in the category, and ranks 99th in saves per game at 3.75.
