DELAND, Fla. – The Lipscomb men’s soccer team ended a disappointing Florida road trip, Sunday, with a 3-1 loss to Stetson.
Lipscomb (4-11-2, 3-4-0 in the Atlantic Sun) failed to gain ground in the race for the conference tournament after also losing to Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night. Stetson (7-5-2, 4-1-1 A-Sun) clinched their spot in the conference tournament by beating the Bisons.
Stetson would get on the board first in this match. In the 29th minute, Stetson’s Elias Beates netted his season’s second goal on a through ball from Kai Eckenrode. Beates collected the pass and fired it past Lipscomb’s Brent McGee to the lower left corner of the net.
The Bisons would net the equalizer just before the first half came to a close. Freshman Edvaldo Pedro found classmate Shea McGee for a one-time volley off a restart. The goal, McGee’s first in a Lipscomb uniform, marked the second game in a row Lipscomb got a goal in the final five minutes of the first half.
“These last two games, we’ve gotten end-of-the-half goals from subs that came on fresh,” said Lipscomb head coach Charles Morrow. “They provided a big lift for us.”
Stetson would pull ahead again in the 51st minute. Eckenrode would assist again, finding Jonathan Mendoza on a long cross from midfield. Mendoza put it away for his season’s eighth goal.
Mendoza would net his second of the day and ninth of the season in the 63rd minute. Steven Saballos was credited with the assist.
“I thought we had several defensive lapses in the second half,” Morrow said. “We were very nonchalant and needed to get rid of the ball quicker defensively.”
“We made changes and looked better after that. Offensively, we weren’t creative enough in the attacking third to get another goal.”
Despite the loss, Brent McGee made six saves. Stetson’s Andreas Schnabl made two saves for the victory.
“We have to focus on Mercer and get a result out of that game,” Morrow said. “Hopefully, we’ll get a chance to face Stetson again.”
Lipscomb is still in the thick of the race for the tournament. Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville and Stetson have clinched spots, leaving three up for grabs. The Bisons sit at fourth in the standings following this weekend with nine points, just ahead of Belmont and USC Upstate, with eight points. Mercer and ETSU are still alive, each with seven points apiece. Lipscomb, Belmont, Upstate and ETSU each have one Atlantic Sun game remaining; Mercer will play two more A-Sun contests.
The Bisons are back in action, Thursday night, when they host Mercer. The season-finale will begin at 7 p.m. It is also Senior Night, and the Bisons will honor five seniors for their contributions to the program.
