NASHVILLE, Tenn. –  Committing 14 turnovers in the second half that led to 11 points for the opposition, the Lipscomb women’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 61-58 non-conference decision to in-state rival Austin Peay on Monday night at Allen Arena in Nashville.

The Lady Bisons were hot out of the gate jumping out to a 15-2 lead on the Lady Govs.  Lipscomb went on to shoot 56 percent in the opening stanza to claim a 40-32 lead at the break.

“The first half of the first half was some really good basketball,” said Lipscomb head coach Frank Bennett.  “We were really shooting the ball well, which I think is what we’re capable of. We got a little bit sloppy and let them get back into it in the first half.”

Lipscomb cooled off in the second frame going 7-of-23 from the floor for 30.4 percent but still outshot the Lady Govs 43 percent to 38 percent.  The Lady Bisons also won the rebound battle 41-30 but turnovers doomed the Purple and Gold turning the ball over 25 times compared to 18 for Austin Peay.

“In the second half, we met some runs and so forth but the latter part of the game we didn’t get the shot selection we wanted,” said Bennett. “We were fouling a lot on the penetration and that was putting them on the foul line over and over.  We just kind of got in that rut and gave them a chance.”

Junior guard Morgan Faulker led all Lipscomb scorers on the night with an 11-point effort on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor including 3-of-5 beyond the arch.  Senior guard Anna Bowers also finished in double figures with a 10-point night.  The Lady Bisons had a nice team effort on the boards with nine different players hauling in a rebound and were led by junior wing Hannah Phillips, who hauled in a game-high nine.

“We emphasize (rebounding) to be a key of the game,” said Bennett.  “Normally, I think that margin of 11 rebounds probably would win for us. So I was proud of that and just a lot of effort.”

Austin Peay’s Whitney Hanley led all scorers with 21 points on the night including a second-half jumper that gave the senior 1,000 career points for the Lady Govs.  Hanley was joined in double figures by sisters Nicole and Shelby Olszewski.

“We’ve got a lot of young players out there at a couple of positions and we’ve got to try to bring them up to speed,” said Bennett. “They continue to battle and we gave ourselves a chance but we just didn’t execute very well.”

The Lady Bisons return to action on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Tennessee State with their first road contest of 2011-12 and the start of a five-game road swing.
