CANCUN - Led by senior Jordan Burgason with six threes and 20 points in his season debut, Lipscomb came from behind to defeat Sacred Heart 79-77 Wednesday afternoon capturing the Mayan Division title of the Cancun Challenge.
The victory gave Scott Sanderson his 200th win at the helm of the Bisons.
After missing his first two attempts in his season debut, Burgason drained six straight 3-pointers providing the needed spark for the Bisons offense.
The Bisons held a 10-point lead with 3:22 to play but Sacred Heart scored on five straight possessions to take a 77-76 lead with 31 seconds left.
Senior Justin Glenn tied the game with a free throw with 13.4 ticks left but missed the second. Freshman Damarius Smith got the rebound and was fouled. He hit both attempts to put the Bisons ahead 79-77 with 10.6 seconds left.
The Bisons found themselves down 42-34 at halftime after allowing Sacred Heart to close the first period on 18-5 run over the final 6:26 of the half.
Lipscomb retook the lead nine minutes into the second period in a stretch of scoring on 9-of-11 consecutive possessions. Burgason hit four 3-pointers during the run and sophomore Robert Boyd drained a long ball with 9:15 left to put the Bisons up 64-55.
A little over a minute later Burgason connected on his fifth trey of the half putting the Bisons up by ten, their largest lead of the game.
Lipscomb was 9-of-12 from beyond the arc in the second half and 13-of-22 overall. The Bisons shot 47.5 percent from the field
Glenn finished with 10 points, a team-high seven rebounds and two blocks. Junior Deonte Alexander tied his season-high with 12 point. After starting the year 2-of-12 from beyond the arc, Alexander is 5-of-9 over the last three contests.
Shane Gibson had a game-high 21 points for Sacred Heart.
The Mayan Division All-Tournament team, as selected by the media, was Robert Boyd (MVP – Lipscomb), Shane Gibson (Sacred Heart), Jerome Jones (SIU Edwardsville), Darrion Pellum (Hampton), Justin Swidowski (Sacred Heart), and Zavion Williams (Lipscomb).
The Bisons become the second straight Atlantic Sun Conference member to win the Mayan Division Championship after North Florida won last season.
The Bisons host Austin Peay Monday at 6:30 p.m. in Allen Arena. The Lipscomb Sports Network presented by Jackson will broadcast the game on 102.1 The Light and LipscombSports.com.
