CINCINNATI, Ohio – Wrapping up the 2011 regular season, the Lipscomb volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 21-25, 17-25) non-conference decision to homestanding Xavier on Saturday afternoon at the Cintas Center.
A week after wrapping up their third-straight Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament crown and NCAA berth, the Lady Bisons (20-10) found the Musketeers just as tough as they were in the season opener when Xavier handed Lipscomb a 3-0 loss in the “Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup” in Houston, Texas.
“We just didn’t come out with a whole lot of sense of urgency,” said Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal. “We battled through first set but we didn’t play with a ton of speed and lost a close one.
“We made some nice adjustments in the second set but just didn’t keep it going and Xavier played well. It’s a little disappointing andwe obviously don’t want to go in the tournament losing. “
The opening set saw the two squads battling back and forth and Lipscomb freshman Lauren Ford drew the Lady Bisons even 16-16 with one of her nine kills in the match. Xavier then outscored Lipscomb 9-6 the rest of the set to take the opener.
The second set in the contest saw the Lady Bisons pull away after the set was tied at 10 to draw even 1-1 but the Musketeers finished strong in the third set and controlled most of the fourth set to earn the win.
Lipscomb junior Kaycee Green led all players with a 15-kill performance, while freshman Jewell Dobson was the only other Lady Bison to finish in double figures with 10. Sophomore libero Stephanie Rex led the way defensively for Lipscomb with 16 digs.
“We never really go into a rhythm and didn’t play with a ton of energy,” said Rosenthal. It’s hard to watch after what we’ve done after the last couple of weeks, but all year long the girls have learned from these lessons and there’s definitely a lesson to be learned here. “
Xavier’s Amy White led the Musketeers with a dozen kills. Xavier outhit Lipscomb .222-.189 and outdug the Lady Bisons 68-59. The Musketeers also notched 12 blocks in contest to stymie the Lipscomb attack.
Lipscomb is set to host an “NCAA Selection Show Party” on Sunday afternoon for all students, staff, faculty, friends and family starting at 4:30 p.m. at Shamblin Theater in the Bennett Campus Center.
“It’s a special deal for our fans and an opportunity to come and support the girls,” said Rosenthal. “Our fans have done so much for us and we want to share that time with them as family.”
Along with free McDougal’s chicken tenders, the event features a 2011 highlight video and a player Q&A session. For those unable to make it to the party, the field of 64 and the brackets will be announced on ESPNU at 5 p.m.
