NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb men’s tennis team won their first match of the spring season Friday night with a 6-1 win over Western Kentucky at Richland Country Club in Nashville.
After an earlier loss to Georgia State, the Bison record now evens off at 1-1.
"Looking back at the matches this evening, you can certainly tell by the reflection of the scores our players were much more comfortable competing since their season openers,” head coach Andrew Harris said. “Our men certainly got better this evening and come Sunday against Samford, they know the challenge that presents them. All in all, a great evening for LU Tennis."
The Bison opened up the match with a sweep of the doubles point to put them at an early 1-0 lead.
Junior Oliver Strecker and freshman Stuart Tierney defeated WKU’s Josh Smith and Arul Selvan 8-5 at No. 1, while junior Tanner Brown and sophomore Miguel Cortez posted a win at No. 2, defeating Craig Kirschgeiner and Freeman 8-3.
At No. 3, junior Colby Shaw and sophomore David Salazar took down Ball and Closi by a score of 8-5.
With a 1-0 lead, the Bison headed into singles play where they won five of their six matches to post a 6-1 win.
The Bison’s only loss came at No. 3, where Brown retired after splitting the first two sets.
Strecker pulled out a three-set win at No. 1 over Smith, winning 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. At No. 2, Salazar solidly defeated Salvan 6-2, 6-2.
Shaw posted a win over Kirschgeiner at No. 4, winning 6-3, 6-1.
At No. 5, freshman Daniel Hernandez secured at win after a tight first set, winning over Closi 7-5, 6-2. Cortez pulled out a victory at No. 6 with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Brady Freeman.
The Bison travel to Birmingham, Ala., on Sunday for a Noon match against Samford.
