FT. MYERS, Fla. – In Saturday’s win the Lipscomb Bison finished one point shy of the NCAA record for points in overtime.
The Bison were unable to carry the scoring momentum over to Monday’s game against Florida Gulf Coast falling 89-68 at Alico Arena.
Lipscomb (12-14, 7-7 A-Sun) shot 39.7 percent while the Eagles (13-13, 8-7 A-Sun) connected on 54.0 percent of their shots, including a 60 percent clip in the second half.
The Bison shot 35.3 percent in the first 35 minutes of the game. Lipscomb hit five-of-seven attempts, including three 3-pointers in the closing minutes of the game. Lipscomb finished 5-of-18 from beyond the arc (27.8 percent) and was 17-of-31 from the charity line (54.8 percent).
Freshman Malcolm Smith scored in double figures for the third time in four outings finishing with 19 tallies. He averages 15.5 points in the span. Freshman Zavion Williams (11) and junior Deonte Alexander (10) also finished in double figures.
FGCU took a 25 point lead, its largest of the night, with 7:38 to play. The Bison used a 16-6 run to close the deficit to 14 points, 77-63, with 2:15 left.
Sherwood Brown led six FGCU players in double figures with 13 points. The Eagles scored 46 points in the paint.
FGCU held a 40-36 rebounding advantage. It was the 11th time in the last 15 games that Lipscomb has been outrebounded.
Lipscomb returns to Allen Arena this weekend for the final home stand of the season. The Bison host USC Upstate Saturday and ETSU Monday. Both games are scheduled to tip at 6:30 and will be broadcast on 102.5 The Game and ESPN3.
