NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The first weekend road trip of 2012 awaits the Lipscomb baseball team as the Bison travel to Starkville, Miss. to take on Mississippi State and Connecticut in round-robin play at Dudy Noble Field at Polk-Dement Stadium.
Mother Nature has already played havoc with the schedule with the first game of the weekend between Lipscomb and Connecticut. The contest that was originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m. has been moved up to an 11 a.m. start due to a storm system that is slated to move in later in the day.
“We’re looking forward to it,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “They have arguably one of the best parks in the country to play in. Both teams are coming off great, great years.”
There’s a reason we schedule these games. We’re trying to get ourselves in a regional type atmosphere. By playing these type teams, I think that’s exactly what you do. We’re looking forward to going down there and playing two really good teams.”
Lipscomb (4-4) will send senior righty Connor Sinclair (1-0, 0.69 ERA, 13.0 IP, 4 BB, 9 K) to the hill in the opener against Connecticut’s (2-4) Jordan Tabakman (0-0, 6.23 ERA, 4.1 IP, 4 BB, 6 K).
“We’re going to stick with the same rotation except we’re going to move (Chris) Nunn into the second spot,” said Forehand. “We’ve got a lot of guys in the bullpen that are capable as well. Our pitches have been doing a great job hopefully, they’ll stay on track.”
The Bison then take on host Mississippi State (6-2) in the fifth-ever meeting between the two teams on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Lipscomb junior southpaw Chris Nunn (0-0, 9.64 ERA, 4.2 IP, 7 BB, 7 K) will go up against MSU righty Kendall Graveman (0-0, 3.48 ERA, 10.1 IP, 3 BB, 4 K).
Sunday features a pair of contests for Lipscomb taking on both teams in the final day of the event. Junior righthander Josh Cotham (0-1, 1.54 ERA, 11.2 IP, 4 BB, 15 K) will start things off for the Bison at 11 a.m. against UConn, who will send righty Pat Butler (0-1, 11.37 ERA, 6.1 IP, 1 BB, 5 K) to the hill. The weekend concludes on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. as Lipscomb lefty Blake Fonfara (0-1, 1.04 ERA, 8.2 ERA, 5 BB, 8 K) battles Mississippi State’s Will Cox (1-0, 0.00, 7.0 IP, 0 BB, 8 K).
The Bison head into the weekend 1-1 all-time against the Huskies and 0-4 all-time against the Bulldogs.
