NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Lipscomb men’s tennis team pulled out a 4-3 victory over the University of Detroit Mercy on Saturday in their home opener at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.
"Overall, the guys did a better job this afternoon showing mental fortitude and sticking with their game plan,” head coach Andrew Harris said. “We need to look at the doubles to see what that looks like because we cannot continue to keep putting ourselves in this hole by losing the doubles.
“What was good, though, is in almost all of the singles victories the guys had to come up with solutions, and they did that. North Alabama comes in next Sunday afternoon, so we will be looking to continue to work on things before conference."
The Bison put themselves in the hole early with a 2-1 loss in doubles play, giving the Titans a 1-0 lead with the doubles point secured.
Junior Oliver Strecker and freshman Daniel Hernandez fell at No. 1, losing to Mike Basha and Chris Cheung 8-4.
At No. 2, junior Tanner Brown and senior Chad Pierron fell to Alex Latosinsky and David Stabley 8-2.
The Bison’s only doubles win came at No. 3, where sophomore David Salazar and junior Colby Shaw defeated Jay Joshi and Pablo Nunez 8-6.
Heading into singles play with a 1-0 disadvantage, the Bison went on to secure four of the singles matches to take the victory.
Strecker posted a win at the No. 1 spot, defeating Nick Tolomei 7-5, 6-4, while Salazar won at No. 2, beating Latosinsky 6-3, 6-3.
Freshman Stuart Tierney picked up another win at No. 4, when he took down Basha. After losing the first set, Tierney came back to win it 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Brown secured the Bison’s final win at the No. 5 seed. Brown defeated David Seeter 6-3, 6-2.
Hernandez and Shaw were the only Bison to lose in singles play, falling to Cesar Escobar Serrano 6-3, 6-1 and Nunez 6-3, 6-0, respectively.
The win improves the Bison’s record to 4-5 as they close in on the start of conference play.
Lipscomb will host North Alabama on Sunday, March 11 at 2 pm at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.
