NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb softball will host IPFW, Wednesday, in its first mid-week home match-up of the 2012 season at Draper Diamond.
Lipscomb and IPFW face off for the first time ever this weekend, with IPFW entering play at 10-2. The Lady Bison stand at 9-6 following a 2-3 showing at last weekend’s Disney Wide World of Sports Citrus Classic.
The Lady Bison are home for the first time since Feb. 18 and begin a 10-game stretch at Draper Diamond that includes two more non-conference doubleheaders and the Lady Bison Classic, which begins Friday at 12 p.m.
Lady Bison Go 2-3 at Citrus Classic
Lipscomb won the opener and the finale at the Citrus Classic at Disney’ Wide World of Sports Complex, but dropped three games in between, March 2-4. Lipscomb opened up with a season-high 13 runs against LIU-Brooklyn before dropping the second game to South Alabama, 9-2. The Lady Bison dropped heartbreakers to Penn State (4-3) and Ball State (2-0) on Saturday before rebounding with an 8-2 Sunday victory against St. John’s. Kelsey Cartwright hit .375 on the weekend, one of four Lady Bisons who hit better than .300 in Florida. Whitney Kiihnl picked up both wins and pitched three complete games.
Kiihnl Earns Her First A-Sun Pitcher of the Week Award for 2012
After winning four games and tossing three shutouts at the College of Charleston Classic, Kiihnl was named Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week. The Batesville, Miss. senior did not allow an earned run in 25 innings pitched in Charleston and completely shut out Virginia Tech, MTSU and Louisiana Monroe. The award is the 10th weekly honor of Kiihnl’s career and her first in 2012.
Kiihnl, Cartwright Stellar in College of Charleston Classic
Kiihnl picked up four wins, three via shutout, and junior Kelsey Cartwright hit .500 (7-for-14) to pace the Lipscomb offense to four victories at the College of Charleston Classic. The Lady Bison opened with wins against Virginia Tech (2-0) and Wagner (7-6 in eight innings). Inclement weather reduced Lipscomb to one Saturday game, which the Lady Bison won by run-ruling MTSU, 8-0 in five innings. A Kiihnl three-hitter led the Lady Bison to a 2-0 win against Louisiana Monroe on the Classic’s final day.
Fact of the Week
The Lady Bison are 4-2 this season against first-time opponents. Lipscomb defeated Wagner, Louisiana Monroe, LIU-Brooklyn and St. John’s in their first-ever meetings with those squads. The Lady Bison dropped their first meetings with Mississippi State and Penn State.
Lipscomb’s Draper Diamond will be the host of the Lady Bison Classic beginning Friday, March 9, at 12 noon. The Lady Bison will face Drake at 2:15 p.m., Friday, and Eastern Michigan at 12:15 p.m., Saturday, before concluding with a Sunday doubleheader against Alabama State (1:15 p.m.) and MTSU (3:30 p.m.)
